Louis Proust


Joseph Louis Proust was born in Angers, France, on September 26, 1754. His father was an apothecary. Proust studied Chemistry and Pharmacy. I would like to analyze the content of anything. He worked as head of pharmacy at the Hospital de Salpetrière in Paris.

He moved to Spain in 1789, fleeing the French Revolution. He taught chemistry at the Segovia Artillery Academy and Salamanca.

He worked in Carlos IV's laboratory in Madrid. In the year 1816, he was elected to the Academy of Breed Sciences, returning to Angers.

His work at the Salpetrière Hospital has yielded some published works on urine, folic acid and alum. In Spain, he studied some Spanish minerals. Some of his studies focused on the extraction of sugar from grapes.
In 1801, it formulated the law of constant proportions. This law was opposed by scientists of that time. By 1808, however, it was recognized that Proust was right. The law was formulated by John Dalton, but the empirical part was from Proust. His law helped to strengthen the idea of ​​the atom in chemistry.

By its law, a chemical compound always contains the same elements in the same proportions, by mass.

During the continental blockade period, he was invited by Napoleon I in France to found a sugar factory according to the process he invented himself. Proust did not accept the offer. He also studied about organic salts and is considered one of the founders of chemical analysis. He died in his hometown in 1826.
